4 Repair Mistakes That Every Car Owner Makes
No matter how many years you’ve owned a car for, you need to very conscious about it maintenance. Whether it’s about the car wash or getting some part replaced, you always prioritize the reliability and longevity. But when it comes to auto repair, there are a few mistakes that people make repeatedly. We’ve highlighted a few. So let’s dive in
Oil Filter
For sure, it’s advisable to change the oil and filter. But here’s a mistake that’s destroying your engine. While removing the old oil filter, just ensure that the rubber gas-kit is still on the old filter. Because sometimes when you take the filter off, the old gasket comes off but the rubber sticks under the engine.
And most of the time you won’t be able to see that since the filter is usually in a hidden location. Therefore, just make sure that you check the old one that the old gas-kit is still on when you take off. Otherwise, when you put another one, with the old gas kit stuck on the engine, you’ll double gas-kit, and the oil will leak. And you know what, the engines often blow up because of this.
Leaving Battery Connected
This is one of the most common mistakes that you make. People often leave the battery connected when electrical work is being done. Perhaps that’s the reason why experts recommend to disconnect one of the cables whenever you are doing electrical work on your car. When you disconnect one of the cables and take it off the battery, it’s much safer to work.
Let’s say you’re working on the alternator. If it’s got live power and the wire touches anything, it can damage the alternator and also ruin the entire car wiring. So when you disconnect one of the battery cables, no power would be flowing through the system and won’t hurt anything.
Changing Hot Spark Plugs
Changing spark plugs is something that we think nobody can do wrong. But people go wrong with this as well especially when they change the hot spark plugs. Be mindful that you should never change hot spark plugs on an engine that’s hot. Make sure the engine is cool when you’re changing the spark plug.
So if you’re up for changing the spark plugs, either do it as the first thing in the morning or wait a couple of hours until the engine cools down. This way, you won’t end up doing any damage. To do it even better way, put some anti-seize lubrication on the threads of the spark plug before putting it back in the engine.
Motor Oil
Do you think that the heavier weight oils better for your engine? That’s not true at all. To pick the right oil, you are supposed to look at your car and see what the manufacturer suggests to use. For some vehicles, manufacturers recommend lighter oil. And, the oil will flow better which is important for overhead cam engines.
