Short introduction

German designer Luigi Colani is a world star in his profession. He designed a number of things everyday, including airplanes and cars. He developed his own distinctive style, which he was baptized “Biodesign”. By doing that, he emphasized the organic appearance of the products he designed. It was very popular in Japan and China, but also throughout the world.

Youth

Luigi Colani was born Lutz Colani in Berlin in 1928. His father was Switzerland, his mother Poland. From an early age, his parents are very important to promote their creativity. So they don’t buy it toys, but allows it to make their own toys. So he learned to solder before school and had to deal with various materials such as wood, plaster or clay.

At the end of the second world war, Colani must serve as an anti-aircraft helper. From 1946 he learned the statue and painted, which he did not finish, because Luigi Colani thought he was better than his teacher.

Because of that he even learned aerodynamics in Paris from 1949 to 1952 and then analytic philosophy, also in Paris. This was followed by involvement with aircraft manufacturers and car manufacturers. When he designed his first GT sports car for Alfa Romeo in 1957, he changed his name from Lutz to Luigi.

Career

Colani quickly got a reputation as a very innovative design talent. In addition to design work in the field of aircraft and car construction, he also switched to other industries in the next few decades. So he built a large and successful furniture designer team in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, although of course he also contributed a lot. He is also active in the field of daily objects.

He reached the peak of his creativity when he carried out his studio at Schloss Harkotten in Westphalia between 1972 and 1981. The so -called “design factory” became a contact point for many students from all over the world, as well as for engineers. During this time Luigi Colani designed products from all fields of life.

However, because he is known for not speaking when dealing with customers, there are some disputes. He found representatives from the German car industry in particularly very hostile to innovation that he finally emected to China and Japan. However, his reputation between consumers in Germany and throughout Europe remains perfect and a very large echo.

From 1982 he was the head of the designer in Canon, Sony and Mazda. In Japan he has been considered a “design god” since then. In 1995 he moved to China, where he later became a professor at another university. In 2002 he finally returned to Germany, where he settled in Karlsruhe.

In addition to the position of professor in Shanghai, he also worked at Tokyo University, Bremen and Beijing.

Considering the many activities and areas where Luigi Colani is not only active but also the formation of force, it is almost impossible to highlight individual highlights in his career.

In principle, the fact that his name has become a synonym for an elegant, curved design and living far outside the world of design can be described as his biggest success. Many of his awards, who entered the dozen, did not mean less for him than that he could help shape his environment in accordance with his idea.
